Cancer Prevention:

Do you know one out of three cancers is preventable by living healthy life style?

LET’S STOP CANCER WHICH IS PREVENTABLE.

COMMON CAUSES OF CANCER AND MEASURES TO PREVENT CANCER:

It is important to have wide knowledge about common causes of cancer and measures to prevent preventable cancer.

1.DO NOT USE TOBACCO:

Effect of tobacco and its products: (smoking, betal nut/ areca nut use, snuff)

  • Tobacco causes heart disease, lung problems, stroke, renal problem and cancer.
  • It causes oral cancer, throat cancer, esophagus cancer, lung cancer, gastric , colorectal cancer and anal cancer.
  • To prevent cancer it is important to avoid tobacco all together.
  • If you are using tobacco already stop using tobacco as soon as possible to reduce cancer risk.

2. AVOID BETAL CHEWING:

Betal chewing includes use of betal leaves, arecanut etc. It causes oral cancer and throat cancer.

DO NOT BETAL CHEWING.

3.DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL:

It causes oral cancer, throat cancer, esophagus, stomach, liver, colorectal and breast cancer.

DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL.

4.EAT HEALTHY FOODS:

  • Unhealthy food habits causes oral, esophagus, gastric, colon and breast cancer.
  • Balanced diet helps to prevent oral, gastric, colon and breast cancer.
  • Balanced diet helps to reduce infection in body.

Food pyramid to eat healthy foods:

  1. Eat a variety of food to ensure a balanced diet.
  2. Ensure provision of extra food and health care to pregnant and lactating women
  3. Promote exclusive breast feeding for six months and encourage breast feeding until 2 years or as long as possible.
  4. Feed home based semisolid foods to the infant after six months
  5. Ensure adequate and appropriate diet for children and adolescents, both in health and sickness.
  6. Eat five portions of vegetable, fruits and green leafs daily
  7. Ensure moderate use of edible oils, animal foods and use of minimum of ghee/ butter/ vanaspathi.
  8. Avoid overeating to prevent overweight and obesity.
  9. Eat diet low in saturated / animal fat
  10. Restrict fat to 15-20% of the calories consumed.
  11. Exercise regularly and be physically active to maintain ideal body weight.

5. ENCOURAGE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:


Sedentary life style leads to
  1. Increase in body weight
  2. Increased chance of infection
  3. Development of insulin resistance
  4. Reduction of immunity in body

Depends upon your physical activity chances of colorectal , breast and lung cancer risk will reduce. This is confirmed by data in research trials.
150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week will lead to healthy life.

Benefits of exercise:

  • Exercise helps to maintain healthy weight.
  • Exercise helps your body regulate hormone levels. Increased level of some hormones or imbalance of some hormones can increase your cancer risk.
  • Exercise speeds digestion, which may reduce the time that potentially harmful substance in the colon.

6. IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH AND REDUCE MENTAL ANXIETY:

Mental anxiety leads to smoking, increased food intake, drinking alcohol and other bad habits which inturn leads to reduced immunity in the body.
By decreasing mental related problems cancer can be prevented.

  • By doing relaxing exercise
  • Involve in your favorite hobby
  • Involve in social welfare activities
  • Spiritual involvement
  • Most important don’t live with past live for present and future.

7.GET TREATED FOR INFECTIONS AND GET VACCINATED:

Hepatitis B and C virus:

Hepatitis B and C virus increases risk of liver cancer. Hepatitis B vaccine helps to prevent against hepatitis B infection.

Human papilloma virus (HPV):

HPV causes cervix cancer and other genital cancers as well as squamous cell cancers of the head and neck.
HPV vaccine is recommended for girls aged 9-24yrs to reduce risk of cervix cancer by reducing HPV infection.

8. AVOID RISKY BEHAVIOUR :

Avoid risky behavior that can lead to infections that in turn might increase the risk of cancer.

1. Practice safe sex

  • Multiple sexual partners lead to contract a sexually transmitted infection- such as HIV or HPV.
  • People who have HIV or AIDS have higher risk of cancer of cervix, anus, liver and lung.
  • HPV associated with cervix cancer and other genital cancers and also oropharyngeal cancer.

9. GET REGULAR MEDICAL CARE:

Regular self examinations and screening of various types of cancers can increase your chance of discovering early, when treatment is most likely to be successful.

10.MAINTAIN CLEAN AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT:

Maintaining clean and healthy environment will results in better and cleaner air, clean water and safe water and also protection from pesticides and toxic substances that will cause cancer.

Healthy environment also reduces the risk of infection and increases the immunity of body thereby prevents cancer by improving health

11. AVOID OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS AND WEAR APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE WEARING:

Lung cancer, bladder cancer, mesothelioma, leukemia, laryngeal cancer, skin cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer are cancers caused by occupational exposure to carcinogens. Occupational cancers can be prevented by avoiding occupational hazards and by appropriate protective wearing.
