  • Are they their usual size, shape and colour?
  • Is there is any visible distortion and swelling?
  • Consult doctor if there is any
  • Dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin
  • Changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of stucking out)
  • Redness, rash or swelling of the breast

STEP 2:

  • Now raise your arms and look for the same changes

STEP 3:

While you are at the mirror, gently squeeze each nipple between your finger and thumb. Consult doctor if there is nipple discharge other than milk

STEP 4:

  • Lie down and use your right hand to feel your left breast and then left hand to feel your right breast.
  • Use a firm , smooth touch with the pad of your three middle fingers, keeping finger flat and together.
  • Cover your entire breast from top to bottom , side to side from your collar bone to the top of your abdomen and from your armpit to your cleavage.
  • Begin at the nipple , moving in larger and larger circle until you reach the outer edge of the breast. Also move your fingertips up and down vertically in rows
  • Begin examining each area with a very soft touch and then increase pressure feel the deeper tissues

STEP 5:

  • Feel your breast while you are standing or sitting

  • It can detect breast cancer even before the detection of lump by palpation.
  • It reduces death due to breast cancer by detecting breast cancer early in the age group 40-70 years of age.
  • It is recommended for all women above 40 years of age annually and to those women who have high risk of breast cancer.

REMEMBER NOT ALL LUMPS IN THE BREAST ARE CANCER, BUT ANY BREAST LUMP CAN BECOME CANCEROUS.

If breast cancer is detected early, it will be more amenable for better treatment outcomes, breast conservation, breast reconstruction and restoration of your body.
